Veteran Honoured, Roy Mah & Howe Lee

A decorated Veteran, Mr. Mah led the first Chinese-Canadian contingent to fight the Japanese Army in the Malaysia-Singapore battle during the Second World War. A founding member of the Army, Navy, and Air Force Veterans Association (ANAVETS) in Canada, Pacific Unit 280, Mr. Mah wrote a special commemorative book on the history of the Pacific Unit 280, telling the story of Chinese-Canadian Veterans during the Second World War. Mr. Mah was among the first Board members of the Chinese-Canadian Military Museum Society, which opened the only museum of its kind in Canada, displaying the sacrifice and contributions made by local Chinese-Canadian Veterans during the Second World War. Mr. Mah has appeared in several documentary films and has been active in preserving and promoting the memory of the achievements and sacrifice of Chinese-Canadian Veterans.


Howe Y. Lee, CD, M.S.C.

Mr. Lee is the founder and President of the Chinese Canadian Military Museum which tells the history of Chinese-Canadian Veterans in both the First and Second World Wars. As director of the Chinese Cultural Centre of Greater Vancouver, Mr. Lee promotes the contributions of the Veterans in the Chinese community and in the community at large. Mr. Lee also promotes the cause of Veterans at the Asian Heritage Month Society, by inviting speakers and for organizing panel discussions. Mr. Lee helps with the coordination of cadet programs, promotes Veterans' Week and Remembrance Day in public schools and plans and participates in the local Remembrance Day Ceremony. Mr. Lee has provided key assistance to the organizers of the revitalization project of the Vancouver Cenotaph in Victory Square.
