Daniel Shiu

Born with the Chinese name of Shiu Do Gay in Saskatoon, Sask. to a father who was a minister, he later changed his name to Daniel.

Dan joined the Army in September 1944 and was shipped to England where he joined Force 136 after his basic training at Maple Creek.

After the war, he joined the Royal Canadian Corps Signals where he was stationed in Prince Rupert from 1947 to 1950.

He met his future wife, Margaret in Prince Rupert where they were married. The Army moved them to the Vancouver Wireless Station at Ladner, B.C. where his wife and family were residents for eighteen years.

Dan, in those years, was posted to Alert, leaving his family in Ladner. Alert, on Ellesmere Island, was the most northern Canadian military base.

Later, he and his family were posted temporary to Ottawa where he attended Russian language classes.

Back in Ladner, Dan worked shift work until the station at Ladner closed down. Dan’s next assignment was Inuvik where his family lived for next three years. Next, his family was posted to Canadian Forces Station Masset. After his Masset assignment, he was to be re-assigned to Alert but he opted to leave the Canadian Forces to work with the RCMP as a civilian member. In time, that branch of the RCMP became CSIS.

Born June 11, 1925

He died November 17, 1998.
