FRANK WONG

Frank was born in Vancouver in 1919 and enlisted in the Army in 1942. He took his basic training in Vernon and became a Store man. He was sent to Barrie Field near Kingston, Ontario and became part of the Royal Canadian Ordinance Corps.

For his overseas assignment, he was posted to the First Canadian Army Troop Workshop at Catherham in the Hill; his main job was to repair heavy artillery in a mobile unit. He underwent more training and preparation for the coming Invasion.

His unit waited for the call of the Invasion and when it came, they had to wait for their turn to cross the channel. Finally they landed in Normandy at Juno Beach and within a week, Frank was made Lance Corporal. He was the only Chinese in the unit.

His mobile unit followed the artillery through the town of Caen with the Germans in retreat until they reach Tilburg in the Nederland where they were relieved by the 4th Armoured Division.

Frank received the Kingdom of the Netherlands Medal of Remembrance by the Consul General Joop M. Corijn at the Chinese Canadian Military Museum in Vancouver May 8, 2003.

He also received the Normandy Campaign 1944 Medal in 2006.
